Tierra del Fuego, The Land of Fire, lies at the
southernmost tip of South America; beyond is
only the icy mass of Antarctica! The main
island, La Isla, is surrounded to the south
and west by a maze of mountainous islands,
islets, channels and fjords most of which are
uninhabited and to this day still unexplored!
The first explorer to arrive was Magellan, in
1520. Legend has it that the natives of the
time used to fish by hand from primitive
canoes, keeping fires on the canoes to warm
them as they emerged from the icy waters;
|
 | when the explorers first arrived it was a foggy
dawn and through the fog Magellan and his crew
could only discern pockets of fire and smoke
seemingly floating across what they thought was
land in front of them. So they named the place
"Land of Fire"! Today, Tierra del Fuego, still
somewhat wild and windswept, has become an
ultimate challenge to present day adventurers.
And although many of the 21st century's
offerings have found acceptance here, it remains
a land before time where nature is still what it
used to be. Enjoy the best nature can offer!
