Great Northern Products Earns Marine Stewardship Council Chain of Custody Certification -
Canadian Seafood Importer/Coldwater Shrimp Distributor achieves MSC traceability
September 23, 2008 (Cranston, RI) Les Crustacees des Monts, a fisherman-owned and operated family seafood business producing the Brand LANGLOIS, cooked and peeled Coldwater shrimp for over 25 years, received Marine Stewardship Council Certified Fishery status.
Great Northern Products, Ltd., exclusive importer and distributor of "Langlois" Brand Canadian Panadalus borealis Shrimp also announced that their company received the coveted Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody certification on October 17, 2010. This certification ensures that Langlois Brand Cooked and Peeled Coldwater Shrimp products are fully traceable through back to the MSC-Certified sustainable Canadian ColdWater Shrimp fishery.
The Langlois family fishing vessels are part of the Quebéc Fishing Association, which at thie time was the only Coldwater Shrimp fishery in the world to be certified as sustainable to the MSC standard. With MSC's Chain of Custody certification, Langlois can now use the MSC blue eco-label on its frozen cooked Shrimp products. Mr. Rene Langlois, his wife Dolores, their sons, daughters and other family members run the St. Anne des Monts business. It has grown steadily since their state-of-the-art processing facility was built 25 years ago, mostly because of the strictest standards in place in Eastern Canada. Previously this shrimp fishing family delivered their shrimp catches to the docks in Gaspe, Quebéc, for sale directly to ITS CURRENT COMPETITORS. In 1986 Mr Langlois decided to build a facility where they could process a finished product that they could be proud of, and he personally made sure that "the quality went in before the (family) name went on (the product)". "Im proud that our method of processing coldwater shrimp is the cleanest, purest and most sustainable way to be in this industry," said Langlois. His shrimp became so popular locally that other fishermen began to sell their catch to the them, while he began to have his catch custom packed for wider distribution, eventually becoming recognized globally as THE QUALITY STANDARD against which all other brands are measured. Then the history of LANGLOIS brand finished product began to take shape, with a strong and loyal following among restaurants, retailers and manufacturers.
"Marine sustainability does involve added expense and paperwork for us, and we have to follow a fairly strict process to ensure chain of custody from our boat to the bag." It has been said, "We already ensure our product is the highest quality, but with the MSC Certification, we can now prove to our customers that our shrimp is sustainably caught and they can be sure that Langlois Shrimp is coming from the MSC-certified sustainable fishery." Langlois MSC-Certified shrimp includes their most popular large size shrimp packed in its own food service 5 lb packs, and its anticipated new line of retail packages for smaller sized shrimp. Most of Langlois customers are retail food stores and 5 star distributors across the U.S.
Great Northern Products, Ltd. was established in 1988. Great Northern imports and distributes other brands of similarly certified shrimp, and is widely recognized as an environmentally friendly, specialty products importer of Northern and Southern Hemispheric Marine products. The company carries other selected seafood products, wild and farmed, primarily from the Canadian maritimes region (which have been mandated to be aggressively managed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans), but also from internationally certified fisheries in South and Central America as well as Northern Europe.
